Secondary Education (ESO in the Spanish school system), is an important phase in pupils’ lives.
The curriculum offered at our school is both broad and demanding, and is focused on different learning competencies. Our mission is for pupils to gain a good command of not only the vital skills involved in mathematics, the basics of technological development or languages, but for them to obtain good knowledge of science, maths, music, literature, history, geography… This is a theoretical education which will continue throughout their lives, guided by intellectual curiosity as a stimulus for permanent learning. In achieving good levels of knowledge in the different disciplines, pupils will build up an intelligent and critical attitude to help them face future challenges.
To achieve these objectives, it is necessary to consider the different attitudes and needs of pupils of this age, as well as their varied interests. It is vital, therefore, that our staff take into account the diversity of our students. We aim for their personal development and provide them with personalised attention according to their specific needs.
In 4th ESO, our pupils can choose to learn about the International Baccalaureate methodology by studying pre-IB. In this school year, the practical aspect of the different subjects takes on greater importance. From this time onwards, our pupils must move on to advanced knowledge, where they are not only able to explain historical facts, literary movements and experimental procedures, but learn to question them and reach their own conclusions.
At this stage the pupils hone their study habits, but it is also the time to choose which subject areas they like best. Our Guidance Programme, begins when the pupils reach 1st ESO, and helps them to find the types of professional careers which most interest them. In 4th ESO and Baccalaureate this programme is extended. In addition to talks and school fairs, pupils have the opportunity to visit the main universities, attend radio workshops, robotics workshops, visit the sales department of a company, see a hospital “from the inside”, as well as other activities which will help them to find a university degree to suit their professional aspirations.
At this phase, we help our pupils to move from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation. They study because they know what they want to achieve and understand that they benefit most from this effort. In this sense, our self-evaluation programme helps them to commit to realistic but demanding expectations, to be aware of how far their results reflect their daily work, and to become responsible for their own studies.
Plurilingualism is a very important feature of our school. The use of English as a vehicular language is still important at this phase, and pupils have the chance to sit external Cambridge and Trinity exams. In addition, we boost the learning of a second foreign language, German, as well as the second language of our Autonomous Community, Valencian. In both cases, pupils can sit external examinations (Goethe Institute and Junta Qualificadora), to accredit their knowledge of these languages with official certificates.
